Melfort RCMP focuses on fraud

Mar 23, 2018 | 8:00 AM

Fraud prevention was highlighted during a day-long series of presentations by the RCMP and other police agencies in Melfort Thursday.

Melfort RCMP Staff Sgt. Deon Marquis told northestNOW he was looking forward to this presentation due to the city and region’s high rate of senior citizens among the population. Marquis said there were several fraud-related topics he wanted to bring attention to.

“What we discussed was identity theft, the prevention of it and what to do if you become a victim. We also talked about all the different mass-marketing scams that are out there and how you can protect yourself,” he said.

About 30 people, mostly seniors, attended the presentation at the Kerry Vickar Centre. Marquis said the criminals seeking victims are studious in their illegal activity and often make victims feel ashamed. A recent case in the region saw a victim lose $80,000 to a “boyfriend” that never existed, he said.

“They are trained and good at what they do. People won’t even tell us anymore because they are embarrassed over a relationship, grandparents, or inheritance scam,” he said.

If a strange number appears on your phone or a vague mysterious email arrives in your inbox, Marquis said it’s best not to answer or respond as opening an email instantly provides personal facts to potential con artists. Marquis said there’s no limit to caution, and the police encourage the public to call them and never provide money in any circumstance.

“It’s heartbreaking when they come in and tell us they have been victimized and lost money,” Marquis said.
