Hawks lifted by Arnold’s hat trick, take 1-0 ANAVET Cup lead

Apr 27, 2018 | 9:04 PM

By his standards, Brandan Arnold entered the ANAVET Cup series on a mini-scoring slump, having not found the back of the net in his last four games.

Well, consider that slump utterly destroyed.

Arnold scored a hat trick, as well as the game winner with one minute remaining, on Friday night to lift his Hawks 4-3 over the Steinbach Pistons to take a 1-0 series lead. He also added an assist in the contest.

Arnold scored the first two goals of the game 16 minutes in to give the Hawks the early advantage. The Pistons stopped the bleeding late in the opening frame as Drew Worrad got on the board, only for Hawks captain Carter Doerksen to answer eight seconds later. That gave the Hawks a 3-1 lead after the first.

The Pistons found their legs in the second period, scoring both goals in the sandwich stanza as Austin Heidemann and Bradley Schoonbaert found the back of the net.

That set up Arnold’s heroics with 1:04 left in the game.

Brotherly love

Two brothers will be battling against each other in this series. Hawks defenceman Thomas Lenchyshyn is going up against his younger brother Jake of the Steinbach Pistons.

Thomas said he was already giving it to Jake even before the series started.

“I told him to keep his head up out there,” Thomas told Mat Barrett of CK750. “He’ll know who the older brother is pretty quick.”

Rest of the series

Both teams will stay in Steinbach on Saturday for Game 2 of the series. Games 3 and 4 will be at the Centennial Arena in Nipawin on Tuesday and Wednesday. If necessary, Game 5 is slated for Friday at the Centennial Arena as well.

Games 6 and 7 will be in Steinbach on May 7 and 8—if need be. All game times are at 7:30 p.m. local time.
