SaskPower to open Nipawin spillway

May 15, 2018 | 5:00 PM

SaskPower crews will be in the Nipawin area Tuesday night, opening the spillway at the Nipawin Hydro Station.

SaskPower issued a release Tuesday saying the spillway will be opened at 8:30 p.m. for an emergency release of debris from the hydro station. The company said a significant ice jam formed earlier this spring, upstream from the station and is now making its way toward Nipawin. Opening the spillway will allow the debris to pass without damaging the infrastructure.

Residents can expect to see an increase in water volume and flow downstream from the station for about an hour after the release. The company expects the water will rise at Tobin Lake by about an inch and SaskPower says anyone on the water downstream from the hydro station should be cautious.
