Saskatchewan Roughriders block party coming to Hudson Bay

May 24, 2018 | 12:00 PM

Residents in Hudson Bay are planning a party after news this month that the community won a community block party courtesy of the Saskatchewan Roughriders football club.

The community was notified about the block party, following an online voting process earlier this month. Jeanine Holowatuik, community development director with the Town of Hudson Bay, said a planning committee will soon set a date for the event, and begin looking for volunteers.

Holowatuik said the committee is planning activities for the whole family to enjoy at the block party.

“This is really exciting for the Town of Hudson Bay,” Holowatuik told northeastNOW. “It’s going to be an exciting summer, and being able to host one of the Rider block parties is really a fortunate event and it’s something that we don’t see often in our small town.”

Tawnya Tremblay nominated Hudson Bay for the block party, and said news the community won is exciting. Tremblay was notified earlier this month that Hudson Bay was in the finals, and used the power of Facebook to garner support for the online voting process.

“I think it’ll be pretty cool,” Tremblay said. “It’ll be a family event for sure … it’ll be family-friendly.”

A spokesperson with the Saskatchewan Roughriders says the block party will feature visits from players on the team, along with members of the cheer team and the team’s mascot, Gainer the Gopher. The event will be presented by Wiser’s Special Blend, with proceeds from liquor sales going to the community of Hudson Bay, the football club said.

Hudson Bay is one of six communities to receive a summer block party. The Saskatchewan Roughriders will also be visiting Regina, Watrous, Bienfait, Vibank and Watson this summer.
