Melfort takes a trip down memory lane at Show and Shine

Jun 15, 2018 | 5:16 PM

More than 100 classic cars and trucks lined Melfort’s Main St. as part of the 29th annual XFM Melfort Show and Shine event.

The show and shine event attracts car enthusiasts from across the region and close to home. Melfort’s Alex Smith has been displaying his ’31 Ford Model A, a retirement gift, for the past six years.

“It’s a lot of fun, you get to meet a lot of people,” he said. “I’ve been on television twice now.”

Smith said he is a proud bachelor but always has room for his favourite lady, his granddaughter, who likes to ride in the passenger seat.

Kim Kornberger and her boyfriend brought their ’79 Ford F-100 to the show this year. They bought their truck in Kamloops and have since had it re-painted, re-tuned, and put news rims and tires on it. She said she is hoping her kids will take interest in it someday.

“We’ve got little kids, so you know if we start them young you know they are going to continue on with certain things and certain traditions,” she said.

Kornberger and her husband also own a 1979 Ford truck which they have converted into a monster with 45-inch tractor tires. She said they might bring it to the show next year.

Also displayed at the show this year was a 1956 Willys Jeep which will be used in a 400-km cruise next month to raise funds and awareness for Parkinson’s disease.

This year’s event was organized by the Melfort Business Revitalization Corporation. The Melfort and District District Chamber of Commerce, which has run the event in the past, was without an Executive Director and dealing with financial issues. Business Revitalization Corporation Spokesperson Tara Muntain said their group reached out to the Chamber board and offered assistance.

“They are dealing with some issues right now and we are all in this together and the name of the game is to help each other out,” Muntain said.
