Riders Block Party connects players and fans in Hudson Bay

Jul 23, 2018 | 9:27 AM

It was cloudy, at some points rainy, and a few of the players even ran out of gas on the drive out east.

None of that was going to stop people in Hudson Bay. Not when Riders pride is in full effect.

Fresh off a 31-20 win in Hamilton on Thursday July 19, the Saskatchewan Roughriders’ Block Party made it to Hudson Bay outside Wally Dawyduk Arena on Saturday.

A few hundred people came out in the town of 1,300 to enjoy a barbecue, meet Gainer the Gopher, test their football skills on bouncy castles with drills, and meet their Riders.

Getting out and about is something running back Marcus Thigpen told northeastNOW he’s enjoying, as he admits he didn’t have too many opportunities to visit smaller town Riders fans during his second season with the team.

“Everything that we need to do is either in Saskatoon where we have training camp or Regina where we have practice and games every day,” Thigpen said. “I love the support from the fan base here, it’s by far the best that I’ve been a part of. They’re coming up, saying amazing things, friendly people, I’m enjoying it.”

Multiple fans in Hudson Bay will be returning the favour to Thigpen and his Riders as they head down to Regina on Saturday July 28 when they host the Calgary Stampeders at 7:00 p.m.
