RCMP and SaskPower warn of text message ‘phishing’ scam

Jul 27, 2018 | 8:00 AM

The Saskatchewan RCMP and SaskPower are warning the public about a text-message based scam.

According to RCMP, the “phishing” scam involves text messages saying residents have received a payment or refund from SaskPower, and provides a link where they are asked for personal or banking information.

SaskPower will never request banking information over text or through any electronic methods, RCMP said.

The RCMP advised the public never to provide personal or financial details in response to any supposed windfalls. Banking details should only ever be provided to trusted sources in a secure manner, the police advised.
