Spirits squad ‘excited’ for Westerns: Coach

Jul 31, 2018 | 2:00 PM

The Melfort U19 Spirits team is getting ready for a big weekend in Unity.

The Spirits are one of three Saskatchewan B Division teams who qualified for the Western Canadian Softball Championships, after finishing second at provincials earlier this month. Head Coach Gerald van Burgsteden said the girls are all very excited.

“We are pretty well rounded, we just need to tighten up our defence a little bit,” he said.

This year maks the third time the Spirits has made it to Westerns. Last year the team won two-out-of the six games they played and did not make it to the playoffs round. Burgsteden said he thinks the team has a much better shot this year.

“We have a few different players and I think we are a little more well rounded both offensively and defensively,” he said.

To help prepare for the weekend ahead, the Spirits team will travel to Tisdale tonight and play a double header against a women’s team from the towm. The first pitch will be thrown at 6 p.m.
