Aug 2, 2018 | 8:01 AM

UPDATE: RCMP have identified the suspect in this case, and said the incident will be reviewed by the Independent Investigation Unit of Manitoba.

According to police, 42-year-old Terrance Charles Nickerson, a resident of Medicine Hat, is facing charges including kidnapping, theft of a truck, dangerous driving, resisting a peace officer, abduction of a person under 16, and operating a motor vehicle while being pursued by police.

Nickerson was scheduled to make a first court appearance today, RCMP said.

A three-year-old year girl has been safely returned to her mother after a scary incident in Creighton involving a stolen truck and a wild pursuit.

According to RCMP, the detachment in Creighton received reports that a vehicle had been stolen from outside a business on Main St. with a young girl in the back seat Monday afternoon. Reports indicated the vehicle was headed toward Flin Flon and members from the Creighton and Flin Flon detachments responded immediately and pursued the vehicle.

The pursuit ended just outside of Cranberry Portage, RCMP said, when the stolen vehicle allegedly struck a spike belt and rear-ended another vehicle, rendering the suspect’s vehicle inoperable. The driver got out and fled into the nearby bush, police said, and the girl was found unharmed in the truck’s back seat.

RCMP from Creighton, Flin Flon, Cranberry Portage, and The Pas set up a perimeter in an effort to contain the suspect. A police dog from The Pas RCMP’s Police Dog Service Unit attended the scene and located the suspect hiding under a vehicle in an outbuilding. The adult male suspect was apprehended after sustaining minor injuries from a police dog bite. He was taken to hospital for treatment and has since been released into RCMP custody.

The man now faces half a dozen charges including kidnapping, theft of a truck, and dangerous operation of a motor vehicle. RCMP said the suspect has not been cooperating with investigators, so his identity has not yet been confirmed.
