Under-19 Spirit finish third at western championships

Aug 7, 2018 | 10:00 AM

The Melfort Spirit under-19 team made their presence felt at the Western Canadian Softball Championships in Unity, winning bronze.

Going four and two after the round robin, the Spirit played the hosting Unity Panthers in the semi-final and lost 3-2. Unity would later go on to win the tournament.

Spirit head coach Gerald Van Burgsteeden told northeastNOW he was very proud of his team’s efforts and said they played the best ball they had all season.

The Spirit qualified for the western championships after finishing second at provincials earlier this month. This year marked the third time the Spirit made it to westerns, but last they won just two out of the six games they played during the round robin.
