Melfort Public Library pushing for new card holders ahead of 90th anniversary

Melfort Public Library will celebrate its 90 year anniversary on Sept. 8, and the board wanted to do something extra to get more library cards in wallets for the big day.

The library is holding a card drive for all of August, where every newly signed library card holder can enter a draw for an eReader and other prizes.

Penny Markland, the head librarian in Melfort, told northeastNOW the drive isn’t due to smaller attendance or a decline in card holders.

“Our circulation, which is the number of items we lent out last year was way up over the year before,” Markland said. “The library isn’t about borrowing books or things; we do a lot of programming that doesn’t show on any balance sheet.”
