14-year-old wins Melfort golf tournament

It was a hot day for a round of golf on Aug. 9, with temperatures reaching as high as 31 degrees Celsius.

Although the long, hot day would continue for 14-year-old Zackery Sommers, as he would enter a one on one playoff to determine the Melfort Golf & Country Club Junior Open 2018 champion.

Sommers told northeastNOW he felt nervous as the playoff began, with all the pressure falling on two young golfers instead of an entire field.

“He (Zach DeGerness) was a couple years older than me so I thought he had the better chance,” Sommers said. “But I focused on making good golf shots.”

The playoff was tied after both golfers made par on the first hole, but a shot down the fairway in the second hole gave Sommers an early advantage.

Sommers was on the green for his second shot, while DeGerness was there on his third. Sommers wasn’t able to make a birdie, but hitting for par was all that it would take for him to bring home the trophy, after DeGerness wasn’t able to make par.

“It’s pretty surreal,” Sommers said. “No one as young as I am usually wins it. It’s always one of the older kids in the older groups, so it was pretty awesome to know I was one of the first golfers to win it at this age.”
