Tisdale RCMP warning about phone scam increase

Aug 15, 2018 | 11:06 AM

Tisdale RCMP members are warning the public about a recent increase in tax-related phone scams in the area.

The scam involves a fraudster impersonating a Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) staff member asking for payment on tax discrepancies.

The scammer then threatens the person they’re calling with jail time or deportation if those funds are not paid. Sometimes they request payment via money service, pre-paid cards, gift cards or bitcoin.

Mounties advised locals to always confirm who they’re speaking with and never provide personal information on the phone, via text, or through email.
