Nipawin group still looking to ‘Fill-a-Backpack’ for 105 kids

With the school year resuming on Sept. 4, over 100 children in Nipawin are still in need of backpacks and school supplies.

Partners to End Poverty, a group that works in Northeast Saskatchewan, is still taking donations for Fill-a-Backpack at Salvation Army Thrift Stores after the Aug. 17 deadline due to 105 children who are still signed up for supplies.

Fill-a-Backpack is a program that supplies backpacks and other school essentials to families in need in Melfort, Nipawin, and Tisdale.

Sheri Fengstad, a member of Partners to End Poverty, said schools will often refer families to the group if children don’t have school supplies to start the year.

“If there are any leftover supplies we hang on to them and give them throughout the year or save them for next year,” Fengstad said.

Fengstad said Partners to End Poverty have a good number of binders, but are still in need of backpacks, paper, pencils, crayons, scissors, and other supplies.

Used backpacks and binders will be accepted if they’re in good condition. Donations made in a community can’t be transferred anywhere else.
