Mustangs lose money in 2017 but see positivity

Aug 23, 2018 | 9:00 AM

The Melfort Mustangs’ last fiscal year saw them in the red again, but there is some light at the end of the tunnel.

Jamie Placsko, President of the Mustangs, announced at the hockey club’s annual general meeting this week that the team had lost money in 2017, but not as much as the year prior.

“I do see positivity in the future,” Placsko said. “We have a very active board with new members coming on, new input, and a lot of new fundraisers in the works to get us back on track.”

The 2017-18 Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League (SJHL) season was Jaret Schneider’s first as Marketing and Business Director for the Mustangs. After getting his feet wet, Schneider said the team should be able to turn the page. Schneider mentioned corporate sponsorships and fundraisers over the Spring will go into the next fiscal year.

“Now that I’ve got a hold on things, it’ll be a better opportunity this year to get the club back into the green and maybe make money for the organization,” Schneider said.

The Mustangs increased corporate sponsorship prices to deal with higher expenses, although Schneider said all sponsors have been supportive of the change.

Season tickets haven’t gone up from 2017-18, but tickets at the door are expected to rise from $13 for an adult to $15 for the upcoming season.

For charity work, the Mustangs have a jersey design contest running, with proceeds going to breast cancer research.
