Mustangs to retire former player and Humboldt crash victim’s jersey

Aug 26, 2018 | 9:11 AM

A former player’s impact is still felt within the Melfort Mustangs organization, so much so that the team will keep his memory alive with their greatest honour.

Jaxon Joseph’s jersey number, 11, will be retired by the Mustangs, after playing 66 games for them over the course of two seasons before being traded to the Humboldt Broncos.

Joseph was one of 16 victims who passed away in the Broncos bus crash on April 6.

Trevor Blevins, head coach of the Mustangs, said Joseph was a special player on and off the ice.

“He was a really good citizen. He spent his time here and did all the right things,” Blevins said. “It’s unfortunate the accident happened. What was fortunate for us is that we got to meet Jaxon Joseph, know him, and be a part of his life. He made an impact on ours too. He touched a lot of people not only within our dressing room but with the community and his billet family.”

Joseph’s jersey will be retired on Sept. 15 during the Mustangs’ home opener against the Notre Dame Hounds, where his family will be in attendance.

Sept. 15 is also Joseph’s birthday. He would have been 21.
