North East Parks receiving $300,000 from the province

The North East Region will receive $300,000 of the $11 million the Government of Saskatchewan will spend on provincial parks in 2018-19.

Some of those funds will go to facilities and infrastructure such as water systems, but the focus for the North East will be on trail improvements at Candle Lake, Lac La Ronge, and Great Blue Heron Provincial Parks.

Byron Davis, executive director of parks infrastructure and capital planning, told northeastNOW this year isn’t huge for investment in the North East but mentioned the region had received higher percentages of funding over the past five years, which totalled over $6 million.

“Year to year priorities change across the province,” Davis said. “Some years other areas receive more capital than funding than others. A larger concentration of facilities and infrastructure in some of the high recreation use parks that might be located in the southern regions as apposed to some of the natural environment parks where some of the recreation facilities are not as concentrated and it’s more of an environment setting.”
