Maude Burke Elementary additions part of changes to Melfort schools

The new school year is upon families in Melfort. It’s the first week where students return to classes and enrolment is higher than initial projections, according to the North East School Division.

Higher registration and Broadway School’s closure 10 years ago are key reasons to why Maude Burke Elementary had some structural changes.

Don Rempel, Director of Education for the North East School Division, told northeastNOW the expansion includes two new classrooms and a pre-kindergarten space in Maude Burke.

“Maude Burke has been continuously on an increasing enrolment as we shift attendance areas and look at the demographics in the cities,” Rempel said. “For three or four years we’ve been using the library for additional classroom support and it’s nice to have that additional space approved and built.”

Rempel said Maude Burke has been the focus when it comes to schools in Melfort, and mentioned the plan right now is for Reynolds Central School to eventually be replaced.

“Maude Burke is most recently opened school in 1999 and Reynolds is the oldest,” Rempel said. “When schools make it beyond 50 years of age, which Reynolds and MUCC are, you look at major renovations or replacement.”

Melfort & Unit Comprehensive Collegiate (MUCC) and L.P. Miller Comprehensive School in Nipawin are two schools Rempel said are in their top five priority for major refurbishments at some point due to their size and shape they’re in.
