Community communication key for Hudson Bay, Porcupine Plain RCMP

Sep 8, 2018 | 2:24 PM

Constant communication with citizens doesn’t just keep the public in the loop, it also helps police keep track of crime.

This is evident in the Hudson Bay/Porcupine Plain RCMP, who have held two town halls in their respective jurisdictions over the past months, most recently in Porcupine Plain Friday.

Cpl. Adam Von Niessen, the Operations Supervisor with the Hudson Bay/Porcupine Plain RCMP detachment, told northestNOW sometimes they can only solve as much crime as the public allows them to.

“We really need people to be our eyes and ears,” he said. “When I’m on duty, I’m one person. The people from the community know what should and shouldn’t be there, they know what’s right and wrong, and know when to call us,” stressing his latter point.

“You’re not bothering us. This is our job, and we love to hear from the community.”

Von Niessen said crimes in the area tend to be a split between locals and visitors from out of town, and if something looks suspicious to a resident, they’re most likely right.

Though Porcupine Plain only boasts a population of 862, and Hudson Bay 1,306, together, those 2,168 people cover a land mass three times as large as the province of Prince Edward Island, according to Von Niessen, police need to patrol.

The RCMP said crimes of opportunity are trending in the Porcupine Plain area, noting locked doors rarely get broken into. Police urged residents to lock their doors and not leave valuable items in their vehicles.
