Melfort Fire Department reflects on Firefighters National Memorial Day

Sunday, Sept. 9 marked the second annual Firefighters National Memorial Day since the federal government officially declared it to take place on the second Sunday in September in 2017.

Fire Departments in communities including Nipawin lowered their flag to half mast to honour firefighters and first responders who have lost their lives in the line of duty.

Melfort Fire Chief Jason Everitt described the day as sombre but also important.

“It’s not something we dwell on all the time,” Everitt said. “But when the day rolls around it just allows you an opportunity to reflect internally on what we’ve seen and experienced and how it impacted our lives and families.”

Everitt said the Melfort Fire Department is looking into getting a flag pole so the Canadian flag can be lowered to half mast at the fire hall and can properly recognize the day in the future.
