Nipawin cannabis store location set

Sep 13, 2018 | 5:00 PM

Councillors approved a location for Nipawin’s future cannabis store during their meeting Monday, Sept. 10.

The store will be located next to the town’s liquor store in the inner downtown core.

Barry Elliott, Nipawin’s Chief Administrative Officer, told northeastNOW the location meets the 50-metre restriction from daycares, playgrounds, and schools. Nipawin’s restrictive distances are smaller than the bylaws Melfort and Tisdale agreed on.

“It’s somewhat smaller but not the smallest,” Elliott said. “Nipawin is different in some aspect than our neighbours. We do have a bit more sensitive uses such as daycares located through our downtown core. We’re mindful of that.”

Elliott said children shouldn’t be faced with any hardships by the smaller restricted distance with cannabis stores not being able to show visual elements of cannabis which may appeal to them.

It’s unknown if the store will be opened for the Canada-wide legalization day on Oct. 17, but Elliott is confident the cannabis store operator is trying their best to have it ready by then and won’t see any undue delays.
