Carrot River junior firefighter program opens for high school students

This isn’t the first year the Carrot River Fire Department has held a junior firefighter program, but now it is part of a more formalized process to introduce high school students interested in pursuing the career.

Bryce Lytle, Carrot River’s new Fire Chief, told northeastNOW he started talking with the town and the high school about a plan with the program once he arrived in late August.

“It was outlined,” Lytle said. “Everybody knew what the goals of the students and members would be when there was a fire call and what was expected of them while they were at school.”

The junior firefighter program is designed to have students from Carrot River High School from Grade 10 to 12, with two students from each grade. Lytle said students under 17 can come train, help with volunteer work such as clean up, and answer calls outside of school hours, but are unable to respond to calls.
