Hawks announce leadership group for 2018-19

Sep 20, 2018 | 2:00 PM

The Nipawin Hawks have decided the five players who will lead their squad try and defend their Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League (SJHL) championship for 2018-19.

Veteran defenceman Gage Misskey, who was on last year’s SJHL championship team, will serve as the Hawks’ captain.

Doug Johnson, head coach and general manager of the Hawks, told northeastNOW Misskey has the two qualities he wants to see in a captain: selflessness and a strong work ethic.

“He’s not the loudest but when he speaks everyone listens,” Johnson said. “He just goes about his business the right way. He’s a very mature individual and a quality young man.”

The Hawks’ coaching staff had the players submit resumes for leadership roles and the decision to make Misskey captain was based on past performance, the staff’s comfort level, and how he interacts with the rest of his teammates.

Fellow returning Hawks Jeremy Bisson, Christian Bosa, and Jordan Simoneau were named alternate captains, although a new face was given the fifth and final “A” on the jersey.

Twenty-year-old Arik Breton, who spent three seasons in the Central Canada Hockey League (CCHL) in Ontario, was named an alternate captain based on his experience where he’s come from.

“Carleton Place is arguably the best program out East,” Johnson said. “We don’t have a lot of guys with a lot of experience and he has a ton of it. It’s very easy for a lot of the young guys to lean on him because he’s been through it, which is invaluable for us.”

While five players have the privilege of wearing a letter on their jersey, Johnson mentioned the only way his Hawks are going to be successful is if all 23 players can be leaders.

The Hawks hit the road on Friday, Sept. 21 in Flin Flon for a game with the Bombers, before returning home the next night on Saturday to play them again.
