With nationwide legalization about to take place Oct. 17, Melfort has the location for its first cannabis store set.

The store's location will be at 103 Burrows Ave. W. in the former Dataport Computer Centre building near Main Street.

Brent Lutz, Melfort’s Community Development Manager, told northeastNOW the city sees the store as a draw to bring in people from outside the community.

“The city is always pleased to have a new business located in our community,” Lutz said. “Since the licensing regime that was set up by the province restricts these businesses only to the communities identified in their licensing requirements, people from around the region here will have to travel into Melfort if they’re looking for this product.”

The cannabis store location follows the City of Melfort’s bylaw by being at least 150 metres away from schools, daycares, and playgrounds.

Lutz said there’s currently no official opening date but mentioned the license holder hopes to open on Oct. 17 or close to that date as the building is undergoing renovations.
