Fall session starts, Sask. politicians return to legislature

Saskatchewan’s politicians return to the legislature Wednesday as the fall session begins.

The proceedings kick off with the Throne Speech where the government will lay out its agenda for the year ahead.

One big focus for the Saskatchewan Party remains the province’s finances.

“I look forward to a balanced budget being announced this spring,” Premier Scott Moe told reporters Tuesday.

But it is the issue of provincial finances and how the money is being spent that will be the focus for the Saskatchewan NDP as it prepares to face off with the government.

“Why isn’t there more money around? Why has this government chosen to spend money on pet projects, like the Global Transportation Hub,” NDP leader Ryan Meili stated.

The new leader spent the past few months traveling the province with his team of MLAs, which has now increased by one more, to hear what Saskatchewan people are saying.

Meili maintains there is a lot to hold the government to account for.

“Teachers are stressed, classrooms are overcrowded and complicated, parents are worried, Meili maintained.

But Moe tells are of a different tune, arguing there is a great optimism in the province and he looks forward to continuing to build on that.

“We want to talk about how we can continue to move forward with investments in our communities and the services people want from us,” Moe said.

The session lasts several weeks and is scheduled to end in the first week of December.
