Stovel Park vying for community prize

Wall said it is crucially important to keep the votes up because even if they don’t receive the top prize, second place is eligible for $2,000, while third place receives $1,000.

Seven community groups banded together last fall to form the group Friends of Stovel Park in an effort to make upgrades to the park that was originally installed by the Melfort Elks.

The gazebo at Stovel Park was slated to go up over the weekend but is now delayed due to snow.

Newsask manager Judy Childs said they began this challenge to help out groups, big or small, that just need some additional funding.

“Examples are looking at building a playground, starting a recycling project, just about anything. We’ve had daycares come in for things that they need like a dishwasher, that kind of thing,” said Childs.

All of the applicants are asked to submit an essay, create a Facebook group for their project, promote it in the voting stage, and then create a promotional video.

The six applications this year include Handiworks from Nipawin, Project Play in Kelvington, Tisdale Dance Centre, Little Explorer’s Daycare in Tisdale, as well as the Stovel Park in Melfort.

Voting is currently underway on the Newsask Community Futures website.
