Residents look to organize rural crime watch committee

The ‘Rural Crime Watch 370’ committee will be hosting an informational meeting tonight at the Bella Vista Inn in Humboldt.

“This came about because there has been rural crime watch in the news” said Committee secretary Jodie Hergott, “And we all know that the RCMP are very busy, and we want to protect our belongings and help them out with the law enforcement, you know, in a rural situation.”

Hergott explained what the crime watch would entail.

“Neighbours looking out for neighbours, watching for suspicious activity, unusual happenings, you know reaching out to your neighbour to let them know something’s off, and making the RCMP aware as well,” Hergott said.

Tonight’s meeting begins at 7 o’clock, and Hergott said memberships will be available.

“Once you’ve registered, you can pick up a property sign basically stating that you know, rural crime watch is active in our area, in our R.M., and hopefully this is going to deter any criminal activity that could be lurking in the area,” Hergott explained.

Hergott said interest in the establishment of a rural crime watch in the area has been strong so far.

“People offered up their different talents and we formed the committee, and we have had, yes, phone calls and lots of buzz about it,” Hergott said. “And people are anxious to get on board with our Facebook page and such, and they want to be a part of it because, you know, it’s a long time to wait for RCMP out here for some people.”

Hergott said they have a real-time communication tool that will help alert neighbours, and the authorities, when something suspicious is happening in the area.
