Remembrance Day schedule for the area

Nov 9, 2018 | 11:35 AM

A chance to pay your respects to those who have served our country.

Remembrance Day ceremonies will be held across Canada on Sunday.

Melfort Legion president Bob Ellis said this year is even more meaningful, as it marks the 100th anniversary of the World War I armistice.

“It’s just special because it’s the centennial of the war, and we don’t get to live to see that too often,” Ellis said.

Melfort’s ceremony begins at 10:45 a.m., and Ellis would like people to come early.

“I would like to have everybody in their seats by 10:30 a.m., so come early, get a good seat,” Ellis said. “It’s not a very long program but it’s a meaningful one and hopefully everybody will enjoy it.”

Ellis said he really wants people to continue to support the ceremony and the Legion.

“I’d like to fill the auditorium up with 700 folks if I could get them,” Ellis said. “We have lots of participants, the Legion is doing well, and I’ve got a whole crowd of them right here now, and the RCMP are supporting us, so we have gained members this year thanks to our programs at the branch, and we hope it keeps going that way.”

Meanwhile, the Humboldt Legion is asking people to join them in Honouring Our Veterans.

Sunday’s events begin with a Cenotaph Ceremony at 11 a.m., followed by a gathering in St. Augustine Church at 1:30 p.m., Last Post at 2 p.m., and the service starting at 2:05 p.m.

The laying of the wreaths will take place at 3 p.m., followed by a social in the Clubroom and Museum Tours at 3:30 p.m., and entertainment at 4 p.m.

Supper, catered by the Bella Vista Inn, will be held at the Legion Hall at 5:30 p.m.. Tickets are $20 for adults, and $12 for children under eight years old.

In Nipawin, the Legion will begin Remembrance Day services at 10:45 a.m. at the Evergreen Centre, followed by lunch at the Legion.

A 3 p.m. service will be held at Pineview Lodge, and Bells for Peace will ring outside St. John’s Anglican Church at 5 p.m.

The day wraps up with a banquet at the Nipawin Legion, and tickets are $12.50 each.

Tisdale’s ceremony will start at 11 a.m. at the RECPlex.
