Tisdale Legion upset over poppy donation box theft

Nov 12, 2018 | 1:00 PM

A small poppy donation box, containing over $100 dollars, was taken from a liquor store in Tisdale last week and the President of the local legion branch is searching for answers.

Sam McAdam told northeastNOW  he has no idea why anyone would steal from veterans.

“You know I guess they think they need the money more than the veterans,” he said.

The small box was one of more than 30 distributed across the community in the weeks prior to Remembrance Day. The funds raised from the donation boxes help support veterans across the country.

“We use some of the money to support local veterans but we raise more money than we have people to support,” he said.

According to RCMP,  two women entered the liquor store last Friday and as one was paying for her items, the other woman grabbed the box, and ran, tucking it under her jacket. The woman’s face was fortunately captured by the store’s secuity camera and over the weekend was shared through social media.

Saskatchewan Crime Stoppers have said the woman in the photo had been identified but there was no word Monday if any charges had been laid. McAdam said it’s unfortunate these types of crimes appear to be happening more often.

Earlier this year some valuable World War Two medals were stolen from the seniors’ centre in Asquith.
