Parkinson phenomenal as Mustangs defeat North Stars

Nov 14, 2018 | 12:15 PM

It wasn’t pretty, but the Melfort Mustangs won their fourth game in a row on Tuesday night in North Battleford.

The Mustangs scraped out a win against the North Stars by a score of 4-1. Melfort only managed two shots on goal in the first period, but were up 1-0 after a powerplay goal from Justin Ball. That was followed up by a second period where only six shots were recorded by Melfort, but two goals were scored. Ball and Braeden Young would tally those ones. Battlefords would also score in the frame to make it 3-1 after two periods.

Melfort was able to lock it down in the third period, scoring once more, courtesy of Zack Smith. Mustangs Assistant Coach Dan Meyers said after the game that it without Shawn Parkinson in net, it could’ve been a whole different game.

“It was ugly,” Meyers said. “Without Parkinson in there standing tall, it was the real reason we won.”

Parkinson stopped 34 of 35 shots in just his second start as a Melfort Mustang. Meyers said his goaltender carried a lot of weight in the game.

“He really was the whole team.” Meyers said. “The first two periods were terrible. In the third period we just adjusted and said ‘you know what, we just have to grease this one out’”.

With the win, the Mustangs improve to 14-6-1-0 on the season, sitting them in a tie for fifth place in the SJHL heading into Wednesday. Melfort is back on the ice on Nov. 14 as they visit the Kindersley Klippers. The game can be heard on CK750 with Winmar Tisdale SJHL Hockey getting underway at 7:15 p.m. with the pre-game show.
