Back to school shopping, with a twist

Stewart Hawke Elementary School in Hudson Bay could be yours, if the price is right.

The town has issued a request for proposals for the building, which has been closed since 2015.

“About three years ago, we opened a new K to 12 school here in Hudson Bay (Hudson Bay Community School), and as a result the elementary school, which previously housed the K to 7 students here became available, I guess, to the community or to anyone who is interested in a development there,” said town administrator Richard Doleszar.

The town is looking for something that meets the community plan, and is for the betterment of the community, said Doleszar.

“The (North East) School Division did go through a RFP (request for proposals) process a year or two ago and results were limited at that time,” said Doleszar “So since that time the town and school division came to an agreement about the transfer of the property to the town, along with a financial incentive to assist with the potential for demolition costs, if that were to be a worst case scenario.”

Doleszar said the town is looking to the public or any entrepreneurs with plans for all or part of the building.

“We would encourage and look at any and all proposals for commercial or assisted living-type operations on that site,” said Doleszar, who added the town would look at tax incentives, and possibly financial incentives, if the plan was attractive enough for the community.

Doleszar also noted an architect and an engineer have looked at the school.

“Overall the condition of the main part of the building is extremely good,” said Doleszar “There are some extremities or some older parts that maybe aren’t quite in as good of shape, but there is certainly a good potential and a good outlook for use or conversion of a major part of that facility.”

The request for proposals will close Dec. 10 at noon.
