Salvation Army collecting for Sunshine Bags for holiday season

Nov 20, 2018 | 11:00 AM

The Melfort and Tisdale Salvation Army stores are once again looking to bring some sunshine to those who are unable to be with family at Christmas.

The stores are collecting items such as toothbrushes and toothpaste, hair combs and candy canes to make care packages for those who will be in the hospital or seniors home over the holidays.

Captain Rick Robins said the program is a tradition.

“We’ve been in the community for three years but it’s been going for more than 25 years in the community,” Robins said.

The Salvation Army has run the program for close to 100 years.

Robins said they typically go to the nursing homes, sing some Christmas carols and have a Christmas celebration when they drop off the sunshine bags.

“It’s just like a little treat bag with a few little amenities in it that we will give to each person so any kind of those donations, we would really appreciate that,” Robins said.

They also like to include a note pad and pen, an orange and socks in each sunshine bag.

“It’s just a little token to show them that someone is thinking of them and that they are appreciated,” Robins said.
