Stay safe this snowmobile season: Hudson Bay RCMP

RCMP in Hudson Bay want you to remember a few things before heading out on snowmobile trails this season.

Riders are reminded that no one is permitted to operate a snowmobile on public property without a certificate of registration from SGI.

Anyone who rides a snowmobile must also have a valid driver’s license, and people born after Jan. 1, 1989 must complete an approved safety course.

Meanwhile, landowners who don’t want snowmobilers or trespassing must erect signs at the corner of their property, and at intervals of 800 metres or less.

Alcohol and cannabis consumption rules also apply to snowmobiles, as they do with motor vehicles.

RCMP remind riders to make sure you are prepared by wearing warm clothing and an approved helmet.

They also recommend riding with a partner and letting people know where you are going and when you expect to return.

A small survival kit is also recommended, with food, water, matches, first aid items, and tools.

GPS devices that can send distress signals are also suggested.
