Secondary scoring the key as Mustangs defeat Millionaires

The Melville Millionaires paid Melfort a visit Saturday night with the Mustangs walking away with a 5-1 victory, their ninth win in a row.

It took six and a half minutes for the Mustangs to get on the board, as Zach Anderson scored his eighth goal of the season on the powerplay. Melfort pressed hard in the first but that was the only goal they would get.

The Mustangs got two more goals in the second period off the sticks of Chase Anderson and Tyson Meyers. After two periods Melfort was outshooting Melville 27-16.

Zach Anderson scored his second of the night in the third period to make it 4-0, but Melville’s Eric Soar scored shortly after to draw the game back to 4-1. The Millionaires pressed hard in the last half of the frame, but couldn’t beat Shawn Parkinson who stopped 22 of 23 shots that came his way. Justin Ball netted an empty net goal to make it 5-1 and extend his point streak to 24 games, and wrap up this game. Head Coach of the Mustangs Trevor Blevins said his team did a great job adjusting after the Millionaires came out hard in the first period.

“I got to give Melville some credit,” Blevins said. “They came out hard. I thought quite a bit of the game, their forcheck was on us. They had some edge to their game today, and we had to adjust I thought after the first. I didn’t think we weren’t as heavy as we should have been. Great job by the guys regrouping and getting it done in the second and third.”

The Mustangs top line was held off the scoresheet for the most part with only one point each out of Justin Ball and Carson Albrecht, and none out of Tanner Zentner. Blevins said it was good to see the secondary scoring come through.

“It was good to see,” Blevins said. “Everyone that touches the scoresheet, it brings a lot more confidence to our game, and brings that dangerous weapons that we can have. Whether it’s Zentner, Ball, and Albrecht or you got nine other forwards who can put the puck in the net.”

Melfort moves to 19-6-1-0 on the season, and remain in first place in the Sherwood Division. The Mustangs are back in action on Tuesday as they welcome the Weyburn Red Wings to the Palace.
