A Melfort couple that has been volunteering with Special Olympics Canada for many years is being recognized nationally.

Dorothy and John Wikstrom are this year’s recipients of the Jim Thompson Award for their volunteer work with Special Olympics. Dorothy has been volunteering for 30 years, while John has been involved since 1994. Dorothy said they didn’t even know the award existed until they received the call from Toronto.

“I just think there are so many people that could have got it,” she said. “Because in Canada, how many volunteers are there in Canada for Special Olympics? So, it’s special to us.”

Over the years, Dorothy said she coached, served on the board, fundraised, along with helping in many other areas. John has also coached, and drove vans for events. The couple even started the curling program in Saskatchewan.

“John and I started the curling program here in Melfort,” Dorothy said. “We didn’t have Special Olympics curling in Saskatchewan as a sport. So, when we got involved, it was in 1999. We got 10 curlers together, and that was the start of Special Olympics curling in Saskatchewan.”

Dorothy said it’s a special experience when you get involved with Special Olympics.

“If you ever do go with them somewhere, or coach them, you’re their friend for life,” she said. “You’ve made a new friend, and when you go to all these games, we’ve travelled all the way from Alberta to P.E.I. with them, and a lot of those athletes still remember who you are, and they’re just wonderful to be with.”

Special Olympics Canada is holding their annual awards gala on Friday, Nov. 30, where John and Dorothy will be recognized. Unfortunately, they are unable to attend.

Special Olympics is also celebrating 50 years of inclusion and empowerment this year.
