Accused in Broncos bus crash back in court today

The case of the semi driver charged after the Humboldt Broncos bus crash returns to court in Melfort today.

Jaskirat Sidhu, 29, faces 16 counts of dangerous operation of a motor vehicle causing death and 13 counts of dangerous operation of a motor vehicle causing bodily injury in relation to the bus crash April 6 involving the Humboldt Broncos hockey team.

The Broncos were en route to Nipawin for a playoff game against the Hawks when the bus and semi collided at the intersection of Highways 35 and 335, commonly known as Armley corner.

Satnam Aujla, Sidhu’s lawyer, appeared on his client’s behalf over the phone at his last appearance Oct 23.

Judge Inez Cardinal was told at that time that Aujla and Crown prosecutor Thomas Healey agreed to adjourn the case until Nov. 27 to review the large amount of disclosure in the case.

The case will resume at 9:30 am in Melfort Provincial Court for defence election and plea. If Sidhu pleads not guilty, he can elect to be tried by a judge and jury, or judge alone.
