Mustangs not horsing around in tenth straight win

Nov 28, 2018 | 7:38 AM

The win streak is now up to ten games for the Melfort Mustangs in the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League (SJHL).

On Tuesday night in Melfort, the Mustangs crushed the Weyburn Red Wings 9-1, in a game where seven different Mustangs tallied two or more points.

From the word “Go”, the Mustangs were dominant, pinning the Red Wings in their own zone for extended periods of time. That pressure would lead to a 3-0 Mustang lead before 10 minutes had elapsed in the game. Carson Albrecht, Justin Ball, and Kayle Tosh all tickled the twine for Melfort. Carson Albrecht would score number two at the 10:33 mark of the frame to really put Melfort out in front after one with a 4-0 lead. With three points in the period, Justin Balls point streak extended to 25 games. Shots in the first period were 20-3 for the Mustangs.

In the second period, the Mustangs would pick up where they left off in the first as Zach Anderson, and Marshall Skapski scored within the first three minutes of the middle frame. That was followed by a Parker Fofonoff marker with 30 seconds to play in the frame. Melfort had a 38-11 lead on the score clock after two, continuing their dominance.

Zach Anderson and Kenzie Arnold scored early in the third period to make it 9-0, but the Mustangs would let up a bit from there, leading to a Rhett Frey goal for Weyburn to make it 9-1, and that’s how the score would end. Mustang netminder Shawn Parkinson stopped 22 of 23 shots in the win.

Ball ended the night with four points, and he said as a team, they are feeling really good.

“I just think we are hitting our stride,” Ball said. “Ten games now in a row, and I think we’re really feeling the momentum is just carrying over into each game.”

The 20-year-old forward also moved into first place in the scoring race in the SJHL with 46 points. He said he really doesn’t think about the scoring race.

“I don’t really like to think about it too much.” Ball said. “Just go out there and play is all I like to think about, and that just gets results for everybody, if everybody does that, and that’s what we’ve been doing.”

Ball also leads the league in goals with 26, and his team is tied for first place in the SJHL with a record of 20-6-1-0. The Mustangs are back in action on Friday as the Yorkton Terriers make their way to the Palace to kick of Parent-Billet Weekend for the Mustangs.
