Mustangs welcome their families for Parent-Billet Weekend

Nov 30, 2018 | 8:47 AM

The Melfort Mustangs kick off one of their biggest weekends of the year on Friday, Dec. 1.

Parent-Billet Weekend opens on Friday as the Melfort Mustangs welcome the Yorkton Terriers to the Palace, followed by the Estevan Bruins coming to town on Saturday, Dec. 2. Jaret Schneider, director of business and marketing, said it’s a big weekend for the team.

“We obviously can’t thank our billets enough for all the work that they put in throughout the year,” Schneider said. “They welcome our players into their homes, they cook the meals, they look after them. It’s a weekend for us to really thank our billets for all the work that they do, but also to welcome in the parents of our players and invite them into town, and get to meet each other, and get to know the staff, and the community, the arena, and get to watch some good hockey at the same time.”

One big highlight of the weekend is the annual Calcutta Shootout after the game on Saturday. Players will be auctioned off wildcard style on Friday evening beginning at 5 p.m. at the Senior’s Place on Burrows Ave W. Bids can also be made on Assistant Coach Dan Meyers who will be participating, along with a mystery alumni shooter, and goalie. The winning player’s bidder will take home the 50/50 jackpot.

The Mustangs are also auctioning off a few of their third jerseys that are going to be worn this weekend. The jerseys pay homage to 30 years of Mustangs hockey, and honour the Humboldt Broncos, after the devastating crash on Apr. 6. Schneider said they plan to auction off a dozen sweaters over the course of the weekend.

“We’ve got some of the jerseys up for auction this weekend,” Schneider said. “We’re going to be auctioning off six [on Friday], and six again [on Saturday]. So, it’s pretty simple, we do three players at each of the intermissions, there will be four intermissions this weekend.”

Head Coach and General Manager, Trevor Blevins, said the weekend falls at a great time for the team.

“It’s nice to all get in one room and have some fellowship and visit a bit,” Blevins said. “It’s always a good weekend, the guys are looking forward to it and it’s really a nice spot to have it as an organization heading into Christmas break, it’s about month away. It’s a good refresher for the guys.”

Melfort is currently 20-6-1-0 on the season, and sit in first place in the Sherwood Division.
