Trojans getting set for meeting with Mintos after weekend split at home

Dec 4, 2018 | 8:52 AM

Even after a loss on Saturday, the Tisdale Trojans remain hot in the Saskatchewan Midget AAA Hockey League (SMAAAHL).

The Trojans fell 5-2 to the Regina Pat Canadians Saturday but recovered on Sunday with a 5-2 win against those very same Pat C’s. Trojans Head Coach Darrell Mann said on Saturday that they got bit by a young star on the Regina team.

“Young Cole Sillinger is the top scorer in our league for a reason, and they’re going to be a handful down the stretch,” Mann said. “Obviously we wanted to win both games, but to be able to bounce back on Sunday was huge for our group.”

The 2003-born Sillinger tallied a hat-trick in Saturday’s win. Mann added that discipline was an issue on Saturday, but that was cleaned up the next night.

“We weren’t very disciplined on Saturday … We probably took more minor penalties than we have all year, and it came back and cost us a little bit as they scored a couple on the power play.” Mann told northeastNOW.  “But I think what hurt us a little bit more was we gave up our first two short-handed goals against this year, and they came at bad times when we were still in the game and had an opportunity to tie it up. In saying that, our special teams bounced back on Sunday and hopefully we can carry that going forward.”

The Trojans had gone 12 straight games without a regulation loss before Saturday’s game, but Mann said one loss isn’t going to shake them.

“Obviously you’d like to win every game, but you’re not going to be able to.” He said. “We’ve got a huge week in front of us, we’ve got four road games coming up in the next ten days, so we’re going to have to be ready to battle every night because it’s going to be a tough game on the road.”

That heavy stretch starts today for the Trojans as they make a trip to Prince Albert for a meeting with their rival Mintos. Tisdale is 2-0 against the Mintos this year, outscoring them 10-4. Mann said in the two previous meetings, they’ve been able to suppress their offence.

“They’re another team that can score and freewheel if you give them an opportunity,” Mann said “We’ve been able to hold them to two goals in both games against us. I think that’s really been a key, and will be a key going forward.”

Tisdale is 17-3-2-1 in the SMAAAHL, good for second place overall, just four points back of the first place Saskatoon Blazers.

You can hear the game from the Art Hauser Centre in Prince Albert on Tuesday, Dec 4 with Winmar Tisdale Trojan Hockey getting underway at 6:45 p.m. with the pre-game show. Puck drop is at 7 p.m.
