Investigation underway after man shoots himself during police interaction

A man from the Onion Lake Cree Nation has died from a self-inflicted wound during an interaction with police.

On Dec. 1, members of the Onion Lake RCMP detachment responded to an assault complaint and identified a suspect sitting in a vehicle in Onion Lake Cree Nation. Officers observed the man holding a firearm. During their engagement with him, the man shot himself and was declared deceased on scene.

Police did not discharge their firearms during the incident.

The man was 43 years old.

The matter is now being investigated by the RCMP with and investigational observer assigned by the province.
