Northeast SPCA continues work on Harry and Eve Vickar shelter

The trusses are up, and the roof should be on soon at the Harry and Eve Vickar shelter in Melfort.

According to Northeast SPCA (NESPCA) Chair, Pat Shiels, things have been going smoothly.

“It’s actually going very well,” She said. “We got the trusses up last week, and the only trouble was the big snowfall. So we will be shovelling snow once we close in the roof.”

Shiels said they will be able to do a bit more once the roof is on.

“As long as we can get the building closed in, in the next month, then we can hopefully work on it during the winter and have it for a late spring opening,” Shiels told northeastNOW

When it comes to fundraising, the NESPCA got some help from their friends with the Melfort Mustangs and Nipawin Hawks Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League teams. The teams were out selling tickets for the NESPCA’s quad raffle. After one night of selling the tickets were all sold out, raising a total of $6,700 to go towards building the shelter. Shiels said the help was greatly appreciated.

“I’m really proud of those guys, they sold every single ticket we had,” Shiels said. “We were going to have that draw in March, but now we’re going to have it now.”

That is not the only fundraiser the NESPCA has going though. Currently, they have a Christmas catalogue going. People are able to purchase things from the catalogue that will help build the shelter. Items such as cans of paint, or baseboards can be purchased.

A link to the catalogue can be found on their Facebook page.

The NESPCA is also going around to the communities and Rural Municipalities to see if anyone will put forward some funds as well.
