Early registration deadline for Melfort Spirit Softball tryouts approaching

Dec 13, 2018 | 4:00 PM

Despite snow on the ground, and cold in the air, the Melfort Minor Softball Association (MMSA) is getting ready for the upcoming season.

MMSA is making a registration call for girls wanted to play competitive softball with Melfort’s Spirit teams. Tryouts for the teams in U12, U14, U16, and U19 divisions are in January, and MMSA is asking people to register for those tryouts before Dec. 15 to save some money. MMSA President Kirk Kezema said they will however, take registrations after Dec. 15.

“This year we’re asking them to register before the fifteenth,” Kezema said. “And they’ll receive a $5 registration fee, paid at the door [of tryouts]. After, we will certainly accept registrations after the fact, but there will be an increase to a $25 fee at the door for registration.”

Kezema said because of the system they are using, there is a large amount of information that needs to be input before the tryouts.

He added that it’s a good summer, competitive sport, for girls in the northeast.

“Well, the [Spirit] program itself is a competitive stream for female athletes throughout the northeast,” Kezema told northeastNOW. “So, anyone who is interested in playing a competitive type softball throughout the northeast can certainly register.”

The program has been very successful through the years, including last year when the U19 team went to the Western Canadian Championships and finished third-place. Kezema said the success of the program can be credited to everyone involved.

“We have a great parent group, and lots of support throughout the northeast,” Kezema said. “We sure appreciate everything that people put in to it, be it coaches, parents, athletes. It’s just a combined effort from everybody.”

To register, Kezema said a link can be found on the MMSA Facebook page, on their website, or an email can be sent to melfortminorsoftball@gmail.com and a link will be provided.
