Pedersen signs books before Mustangs write-off Broncos in Melfort

Dec 16, 2018 | 12:09 PM

It was a busy, but successful weekend for the Melfort Mustangs in the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League (SJHL).

Prior to the game Saturday, the Mustangs brought Rod Pedersen to the Northern Lights Palace for a book signing to help promote the SJHL’s 50th Anniversary book that he produced and compiled called “Heart and Soul of the SJHL”. Pedersen said the Commissioner of the SJHL, Bill Chow figured he was the best choice for the job.

“He came to me and said ‘hey, we’ve got our 50 year coming up in 2018,’” Pedersen told northeastNOW. “He actually happened to be standing in a book store in Saskatoon and he’s like ‘who could write this’, and he looked down and saw my Rider book sitting there so there’s only one guy he thought would be the best choice to do it.”

Pedersen has spent a lot of time around the SJHL and he said writing the book really opened his eyes.

“I thought I knew everything there was to know about the SJHL,” he  said. “I found out there was way more that I don’t know.”

He added the book is a great read for anyone who is into their hockey.

“All I say, and I say to everybody, if you love hockey and you love Saskatchewan, you’ll love this book because it’s got everything in it,” Pedersen said. “ I don’t think we left anything out.”

The book is being sold online, and at most souvenir booths around the SJHL.

Melfort 6-2 winners at home against Humboldt

On the ice, it was another big win for the Melfort Mustangs. The Mustangs downed the Humboldt Broncos 6-2 Saturday in Melfort’s Teddy Bear Toss game.

The first goal didn’t come until about five minutes remained in the first period. Carson Albrecht notched his 25th goal of the year, prompting hundreds of stuffed animals to be tossed onto the Northern Lights Palace ice. A total of 360 teddy bears were thrown.

Once the ice was cleared the Humboldt Broncos responded. Former Mustang, Drew Warkentine bit his former team with a power play goal, his tenth of the season. The first period ended with things tied at one goal each.

The Mustangs took over again in the second period as they had done the night before. After scoring four goals on Friday night in Humboldt, Melfort notched three in the middle frame Saturday.

Justin Ball notched his 36th, and 37th goals of the season before two and a half minutes had passed in the period. Those goals extended Ball’s point and goal scoring streaks to 31, and 13 games respectively. Nolan Kadachuk scored about halfway through the second frame to make it 4-1, and things were blown wide open.

In the third period, Michael Clarke scored for Humboldt to bring things back to 4-2, but Melfort would take over again. Boedy Donald scored at the 14:27 mark, and Alex Rondeau notched his first career SJHL goal at the 18:35 mark, finishing off the Broncos with a 6-2 Melfort win.

The victory moves Melfort to 23-8-2-0 in the SJHL, and they are back in action on Friday, Dec. 16 when they host their rival Nipawin Hawks.
