Melfort Peewee hockey team to be on Hockey Night in Canada

The Melfort Mustangs Peewee AA team will get some national airtime this weekend.

Earlier in the season, Melfort Minor Hockey applied for funding through Scotiabank, and they were lucky enough to be chosen, and receive $1,000. General Manager Dale Atkinson said the funding was just the beginning as the team was also chosen to introduce Hockey Night in Canada on Dec. 22.

“Our team was I guess the face of that application.” Atkinson told northeastNOW. “So, Scotiabank was gracious enough to give us $1,000 to Melfort Minor Hockey, and with that, our team was chosen by Scotiabank to have that appearance on Hockey Night in Canada, coming up on Dec. 22.”

The team will have seven speaking parts as they introduce the show on Saturday night. Atkinson said the appearance is something they can really come together through.

“Everybody has really rallied around this.” Atkinson said. “From the kids, right to the parents and the coaches. As far as a kid growing up, it’s their dream really to play on a Saturday night game on Hockey Night in Canada. Although we’re not in the NHL, it certainly is very exciting to be a part of that iconic Saturday night event that we all grew up watching.”

Atkinson said the appearance for the kids is great, but the donation from Scotiabank is huge for Melfort Minor Hockey.

“Hockey certainly is a very expensive sport,” Atkinson said. “Anytime we can get corporate sponsors to step up and provide funding like this, certainly goes a long way in ensuring as many kids as possible can play the sport of hockey, and play organized hockey in town here.”

The Mustangs are currently sixth place in the North Sask. standings of the Saskatchewan AA Hockey League heading into the Christmas break.
