St. Brieux basketball team Wyoming bound for basketball tournament

The St. Brieux High School Senior Boys Basketball team will be traveling south for the winter.

The boys will be in Gillette, Wyoming from Dec. 26 to 30 to take part in the 2018 Energy Classic Holiday Tournament, a basketball showcase that began in 1998.

Organizers of the Energy Classic Holiday Tournament search for teams across the United States, along with one Canadian squad to fill the bracket. After one of the American teams dropped out, organizers called St. Brieux High School’s basketball program and invited them to join St. Joseph High School from Red Deer, Alberta.

Ryan Trumbley, head coach of St. Brieux’s Senior Boys Basketball team, told northeastNOW him and assistant coach Erin Bernhard only had a few days to decide, but pulled the trigger because their boys earned the opportunity with their work on and off the court.

“They’re going to get a lifetime’s worth of memories is probably the most important thing, that they enjoy the experience,” Trumbley said. “Have fun with it and showcase the level of talent we have in our small community.”

St. Brieux won gold at HOOPLA 2018 as part of the Saskatchewan High Schools Athletic Association Provincial Basketball Championships, and one of the questions Trumbley and Bernhard considered was how this trip could help their goal of back-to-back titles. It was determined the team bonding aspect and being pushed every game by other strong basketball programs would help the St. Brieux boys prepare for tough competition in March.

“Part of the experience of going down there is more than just basketball,” Trumbley said. “We obviously want to show how strong of a program we are, but basketball probably takes a second place to the experience itself. Getting to travel with a group of guys that are very close to each other, get along super well, and been playing basketball together for a long time.”

Trumbley mentioned Mount Rushmore, Deadwood, and Devils Tower as some of the sights the team will get to see.

The St. Brieux Senior Boys will play their first game on Dec. 27 in the evening against Gillette locals Campbell County High School.
