Wildlife collisions cost millions: SGI spokesperson

There were over 15,000 wildlife collision claims provincially in 2017 which cost around $80 million.

Tyler McMurchy with SGI said those numbers haven’t gone down over the last three months.

“There were 6,047 wildlife claims reported to SGI between October 10, 2018 and January 10, 2019,” he said.

Gary Schrader with the Buckland Fire Department hopes people slow down and stay alert.

“Watch out for wildlife, because we’ve been to a lot of those calls lately,” Schrader said.

He reports that they’ve recently responded to collisions with two moose and two or three deer collisions.

With nutrition hard to come by in winter months, animals look for easily available options. Wildlife will lick road salt off highways which poses a significant risk for drivers.

Peak times for wildlife collisions are dawn and dusk.
