A frightening disappearance has led to a happy ending for a Bankend family.

Late yesterday afternoon, a parent called Wynyard RCMP late yesterday afternoon to report their 11-year-old daughter left the house between 3 and 5 p.m.

The child was home sick, and upon returning to the home, the mother saw tracks in the snow leaving the residence.

A search team was quickly assembled as daylight was running out and temperatures were dropping.

A local volunteer found some tracks in the snow which led toward a frozen slough about four miles west of Bankend. The volunteer found the girl roughly two hours from when the search started. She was located facedown in the snow but was still alive. The girl was treated for hypothermia and exposure injuries at the hospital in Wynyard.
