Lake Lenore ice fishing derby promises $10,000 grand prize

Jan 16, 2019 | 4:00 PM

Hundreds of anglers are expected to converge this Saturday for the Lake Lenore Lions ice fishing derby.

The top prize for this year is a guaranteed $10,000 for the biggest fish caught between 9:30 a.m. and 2 p.m.

Wildlife committee member Tim Prodahl said the event continues for the 10th year for good reason.

“We have nothing but support and the participants have been fantastic as far as the conditions and rules which makes it possible for us to do this,” Prodahl said.

The derby continues to grow each year. Over 600 attended last year’s event.

The regular prize money format is normally a 50 per cent payout but since it is the 10th anniversary, organizers decided they would guarantee the top prize at $10,000. Second, third, and fourth prize will still follow the previous format.

The derby is a bit different from others in that anglers are welcome to use ice shacks and electronics including fish finders and cameras.

The entry fee is $50 a person in advance or $60 a person on derby day. Registration begins at 8 a.m. at Lungs Beach.
