Melfort changes snow clearing priorities

Jan 18, 2019 | 11:00 AM

The city of Melfort has changed its snow clearing protocol.

Council approved a change to include nursing homes in the first group of locations to get their snow cleared by the city.

Mayor Rick Lang said the change was made after a delegation from Nirvana care home previously addressed council following a heavy snow.

The delegation was concerned emergency crews and Nirvana staff members were having difficulty making it to the facility after significant snow events.

“They wanted to be put on a priority snow removal basis along with the hospitals and the schools, and what is considered the primary routes,” Lang said. “They weren’t part of the primary route at that time.”

Lang said council agreed with the delegation and made the change this week.

“After this resolution [Monday night], they are included in what we call the first snow removal that’s happening in the city,” Lang said. “The city is broken up into a map that shows within a certain amount of hours, these areas will be cleaned, within a certain amount of days these areas will be cleaned.”

Lang said residential areas will have their snow removal as soon as possible, but removal in those areas isn’t deemed essential.

“Having said that, I have heard from many citizens in Melfort that our snow removal is second to no other community in the province,” said Lang. “We have great snow removal and a city crew that does an excellent job. I have experienced that because I have been in other communities recently, and it looks like some of their streets haven’t been cleared at all this winter.”
