Pouring Watercolors with Nadine Hoffman
February 15, 2017 | Creekside Orchard | 7pm to 9:30pm

Join Nadine as she teaches us the ins and outs of pouring watercolors…a great technique for loosening up your painting and creating a lively background. Masking is used to keep areas white, then watercolors are poured directly onto the paper, allowing the watery colors to mingle on the surface. Most importantly, though, you’ll find that tackling watercolor scenes doesn’t have to be difficult, it can be a fun, energetic process with a lot of flexibility and “play” involved.

Supplies
– 2 – 3 pieces of 300lb paper (Arches or Fabriano are some brands) hot or cold pressed – doesn’t matter. Size is also up to individual. Michaels does not have this paper! Hues art supply in Saskatoon stocks it. A 22x 30″ sheet is between $23 – $27. From a sheet this size you can get 4 – 6 good sized papers. For this class, 1 or 2 papers (8X12 or so) would be lots. 2 participants can share 1 large sheet.
– water color paint – whatever you have on hand – but NEED Winsor red, Winsor yellow and Winsor blue (primary colors for mixing).
– 3-6 small “cups”. Preferably with a lip to make pouring easier. These can be any container, laundery scoop etc. – check the dollar store.
– Paper towels, and an old towel – at least hand towel size – bigger is better. Or have 2.
– A spray bottle filled with water. or smaller spritz bottle to direct color flow – again – check dollar store.
– Pencil – for sketching.
– A few paint brushes – at least one flat. One large “mop” brush can also be useful for wetting paper more precisely.
– plastic pipettes. Or some kind of clear droppers. (squeeze end to suck up or squirt out the paint mix). These are super cheap – like 4/$1. Plus Stuff Junction may have.
– Masking fluid. (Basically rubber cement) to keep areas you want to stay white). Michaels has this. It is nice to have the kind with a “needle” tip attachment.
– Large shallow pan/wide bucket for soaking paper and catching drips. Large rectangular foil roasting pans will work for this. You want to fit the whole width of the paper in at the same time.
– A support. Handy but not essential. I use a piece of “sign board” – corrugated plastic stuff. This should be slightly larger than your paper. You can still work without one, but its nice to have some type of solid surface to lay your piece on to dry.

***If you want to bring a sketch in that you’ve already masked that would be great, as drying time is a factor. We will likely work on 2 paintings during the evening. We can start more if participants want – but again, drying time. We can do backgrounds at the orchard and then people can finish them at home if need be.***

About Creekside Orchard
Creekside Orchard is a u-pick orchard located on the outskirts of Melfort. Mel and Imogene have the best little cafe…it’s cozy, surrounded by a beautiful landscape and maybe the best of all – it’s licensed! Wine is available for purchase (cash only please). Minors are able to attend. This sweet little year-round venue has become Melfort Art Groups “home”. Thank you, Mel and Imogene, for hosting us!
